As I’m teaching a course on Public Theology on Wednesday nights at our church, I’m pointing out the unavoidable intersection of theology, history, and politics. Last week I highlighted the necessity of limited government due to the truth supported in theology and history that no-one can be trusted with much political power. Therefore, we need a separation of powers with a system of checks and balances.
One of the key features of a healthy democracy is the presence of mediating institutions between the individual and the state. I write about that in this article on the benefits of faithful church attendance in point number eight. My contention is that one of the most patriotic things you can do is go to church. It’s not the only reason to attend church, and it’s not even close to the best reason. But of the many good reasons, it’s one of them. Read about it here.
